Welcome to the world of Ayurveda and Vegetarian Cooking.

Ayurveda, India's Ancient System Of Healing, Teaches That Having The Right Diet Is Intrinsic To Health And Longevity.

According to Ayurveda, the kitchen is the hospital where your health starts. Learn to setup an Ayurvedic Kitchen.

Food is the fuel of human life. But it is not as simple as it seems, many people do have digestion problems. According to Ayurveda the process of eating food is very important for our physical and mental health.

Bhagvad Geeta Chapter 15 Verse 14, it is explained clearly:

अहं वैश्वानरो भूत्वा प्राणिनां देहमाश्रित: |
प्राणापानसमायुक्त: पचाम्यन्नं चतुर्विधम् || 14||

ahaṁ vaiśhvānaro bhūtvā prāṇināṁ deham āśhritaḥ
prāṇāpāna-samāyuktaḥ pachāmy annaṁ chatur-vidham

aham—I; vaiśhvānaraḥ—fire of digestion; bhūtvā—becoming; prāṇinām—of all living beings; deham—the body; āśhritaḥ—situated; prāṇa-apāna—outgoing and incoming breath; samāyuktaḥ—keeping in balance; pachāmi—I digest; annam—foods; chatuḥ-vidham—the four kinds

It is I who take the form of the fire of digestion in the stomachs of all living beings, and combine with the incoming and outgoing breaths, to digest and assimilate the four kinds of foods.

The four kinds of food (chaturvidham) alluded to in this verse are:
  1. Bhojya. These include foods that are chewed with the teeth, such as bread, chapatti, etc.
  2. Peya. These are foods that are swallowed, such as milk, juice, etc.
  3. Kośhya. These are foods that are sucked, such as sugarcane.
  4. Lehya. These include foods that are licked, such as honey, etc.

So lets begin this journey into the world of spices, by understanding this:

"annam brahma raso Vishnu
pakto devo maheshvarah
evam jñaktva tu yo bhunkte
anna dosho na lipyate"

The creative energy in the food is Brahma.
The nourishing energy in the body is Vishnu.
The transformation of food into pure Consciousness is shiva.
If you know this, then any impurities in the food you eat will never become part of you.
