The four kinds of food (chaturvidham) alluded to in this verse are:
- Bhojya. These include foods that are chewed with the teeth, such as bread, chapatti, etc.
- Peya. These are foods that are swallowed, such as milk, juice, etc.
- Kośhya. These are foods that are sucked, such as sugarcane.
- Lehya. These include foods that are licked, such as honey, etc.

So lets begin this journey into the world of spices, by understanding this:
"annam brahma raso Vishnu
pakto devo maheshvarah
evam jñaktva tu yo bhunkte
anna dosho na lipyate"
The creative energy in the food is Brahma.
The nourishing energy in the body is Vishnu.
The transformation of food into pure Consciousness is shiva.
If you know this, then any impurities in the food you eat will never become part of you.
