RELAX!

RENEW!

RESTORE!

Restorative Yoga is a gentle yoga practice where we seek to restore and align body and mind, which is the true meaning of yoga. The development of these poses is credited to BKS Iyengar , a widely recognised authority on yoga.

Typically a restorative class includes a sequence of a limited number of gentle yoga poses that are practiced with the support of props that allow one to completely relax and surrender to the pose. Props used in this practice include bolsters, chairs, straps. blocks, blankets and eye-pillows.  The poses are held for a number of minutes or as long as is comfortable and include gentle twists, seated forward bends and gentle back bends as well as prone poses. Practicing poses without strain stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system which allows the body to relax and release any deeply held tension.

The practice helps one to achieve a state of balance and is very soothing to the nervous system.  A class may begin and end with savasana (corpse pose) and soothing music may be played.  There is a focus on the breath, which is very calming and deep breathing techniques are also practiced.

Restorative yoga is ideal for anyone feeling “burnout”, stress, recovering from injury, suffering physical ailments of many descriptions,  and also mental fatigue,  and anxiety. Modifications to each pose can be made by the teacher for each student so that they are able to experience the most ease and comfort whilst in the pose.

The poses are chosen to relax and calm the body and mind and help one to feel recharged when drained and they are known to improve sleep dramatically.  Restorative yoga has many benefits including balancing an active physical lifestyle and restoring when one is low on energy. The practice is known to boost immunity and improve mood.

It has a great capacity to heal stress related physical and mental symptoms, thus improving physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.
