When the Breath wanders, the mind is unsteady, but when the Breath is still, so is the mind still.” – Hatha Yoga Pradipika

Our mind is a kite and its string is our breath. The best way to gain control over your life and de-clutter your mind is through your breath!

We can survive 3 weeks without food, 3 days without water, but only 3 minutes without breath. Truly, BREATH IS LIFE. But breath serves us in a much deeper way than mere survival.

Breath is the conscious bridge between our mind and body and crossing this bridge with intention can lead us to deep understanding and profound change. Yogic Breathing is a scientific way to good health, longevity and spiritual progress, and it is also the best way to lead into meditation.

Pranayama is the conscious awareness of breath: the life force that both energizes and relaxes the body. The term is derived from the Sanskrit, prana, meaning "life force," and ayama, meaning "extension."

“I take refuge in the breath. Breath is all this, whatever there is, and all that ever will be. I take refuge in the breath.” Chandogya Upanishad

Inhale, exhale, repeat. Breathing is so simple, and yet its effects are miraculous. The ultimate sign of life, the foundation of meditation, breath is the means by which we can truly focus on the present moment.

Science is only just confirming the wondrous merits of deep breathing. But yogis and meditators have understood its power for centuries.

Breath As A Uniting Force
Breath is the bridge which connects life to consciousness, which unites your body to your thoughts. Whenever your mind becomes scattered, use your breath as the means to take hold of your mind again.

“When you are overwhelmed, confused or worried resort to basics – take refuge in your breath.”

Your breath is always with you and is directly linked to your nervous system. When you feel overwhelmed, confused or worried slowing down you breathing can help you to regain balance by activating the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for “resting and digesting”.

Become aware of your breath, it’s simplicity and rhythm as you take one breath at a time. Focus on lengthening your exhalation breath by breath.
Breath As A Foundation
Our breathing is a stable solid ground that we can take refuge in. No matter what is going on inside us – thoughts, emotions, or perceptions – our breathing is always with us, like a faithful friend. Whenever we are carried away by our thinking, when we are overwhelmed by strong emotions, or when our minds are restless and dispersed, we can return to our breathing.

Breath As A Form Of Control

Your breathing should flow gracefully, like a river, like a watersnake crossing the water, and not like a chain of rugged mountains or the gallop of a horse. To master our breath is to be in control of our bodies and minds. Each time we find ourselves dispersed and find it difficult to gain control of ourselves by different means, the method of watching the breath should always be used.

See what our students are saying who have attended this course:

"I attended pranayama workshop at Sri Ma School of Yoga and learnt a lot about how the different breathing techniques activate and support the body along with experiencing the surreal practice of Yoga Nidra. Veena is very knowledgeable in regards to yogic philosophy and will deepen your understanding of yoga no matter what level you are at!! I highly recommend this workshop to anyone that has an interest in yoga beyond asana. Thankyou Veena!!', Kelly Dixon
